Amazon is set to transform its Fire TV devices from simple Matter Casting screens into powerful smart home hubs. The company’s FireOS recently received Matter 1.4 certification, potentially enabling it to function as a Matter Controller.
This major update bridges the gap between the Alexa and Fire TV ecosystems, allowing users to manage a wide range of smart home devices directly from their television, much like they already can with Eero routers and Echo speakers.
A powerful and versatile Matter controller
The certification files reveal an extensive list of supported device types, turning the FireTVs into a home center for the home. Support ranges from essentials like lights, switches, and thermostats to more complex appliances such as refrigerators, ovens, and laundry machines. It also includes key security devices like smoke alarms, door locks, and window coverings.
Notably, the support for Air Quality Sensors is incredibly detailed, covering measurements for Carbon Dioxide, PM1/2.5/10, Radon, and Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOCs), etc. This detailed support could pave the way for a new, advanced air quality monitor under Amazon’s own brand, expanding its first-party Matter hardware beyond a simple smart plug.
Beyond device control, the update suggests that next-generation Fire TV hardware may include a built-in Thread Border Router alongside standard Wi-Fi and Ethernet. And the platform could be able to manage first and third-party Matter-enabled Thread Border Routers and Wi-Fi Access Points, as the compliance files note.
An interesting detail in the certification notes the hardware version as “Echo Plus,” suggesting this underlying Matter controller software could be shared across other Alexa devices, streamlining Matter development for Amazon.
Matter Alpha has reached out to Amazon, but has yet to receive a response as of the press time.
A strategic move to catch up in the living room
While Fire TV is a major player in streaming, holding the third-largest TV OS market share in North America in early 2025 according to Omdia, it has lagged behind competitors in smart home integration.
Rivals like Google TV, Apple TV, and Samsung’s SmartThings have already deeply integrated Matter controls and hub functionality into their television platforms, using the always-on nature of a TV to manage the smart home.
By adding these crucial hub features, Amazon is not just enhancing the Fire TV experience but making a strategic play to win over new users. The television is an ideal centerpiece for the smart home, and this update positions Amazon to compete more aggressively in the battle for the connected living room.
