Premium appliance manufacturer Dyson is making a significant leap into the broader smart home world. The company recently received Matter certification for its extensive line of air purifiers, signalling a major move to embrace the universal smart home standard. With 53 models now certified, a massive firmware update or new products appear to be on the horizon, promising to integrate these high-end devices seamlessly into ecosystems like Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa.
This move marks a substantial upgrade from the basic Wi-Fi and Bluetooth controls previously offered through Dyson’s standalone app to Matter under 1.4 spec.
Deep integration through Matter
A look at the certification documents reveals that Dyson isn’t just adding basic on/off controls. Instead, the purifiers will appear as composite devices in Matter-compatible apps, exposing a rich set of controls, including a dedicated Air Purifier, Air Quality Sensor, Temperature Sensor, Humidity Sensor, and Thermostat.
The core air purifier controls will include power and fan speed adjustments. Crucially, the integration also brings filter monitoring for both the Activated Carbon and High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters, ensuring users get timely reminders for replacements.
The air quality sensor is particularly comprehensive, capable of monitoring a wide range of pollutants, including Formaldehyde, Nitrogen Dioxide, PM2.5, PM10, and Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOCs).
For models that also heat or cool, the thermostat function will allow for precise temperature adjustments and mode control directly through Matter, with the flexibility to switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit depending on the user’s platform.
Pricing and availability
Some of the air purifiers certified are already available for purchase on Dyson’s official website, with prices often approaching $1,000 in the U.S. market.
Dyson has not yet announced an official release date for the Matter firmware update. However, based on typical slower timelines for major brands following official certification, customers can likely expect the update to roll out in quarters. As of the press time, Dyson has yet to respond to Matter Alpha’s inquiry.
