Eve, a leading Matter device maker, is expected to bring Matter support to the Eve Shutter Switch through an upcoming update, according to a recent certification published on Monday.
The Eve Shutter Switch EU just received its Matter certification, marking the first device listed under the Matter 1.4.1 specification. Originally designed to work with Apple HomeKit via Thread, the switch will finally gain native Matter support – bringing local compatibility with all major smart home platforms.
What’s supported in Matter?
Firmware version 3.6.0 includes the Window Covering cluster, allowing the device to function as a curtain or blind across Matter platforms. This means you’ll be able to control it with on/off commands and percentage-based positioning via Matter.
Additional features may be accessible through vendor-specific clusters, and will likely be available through the Eve app for both iOS and Android – as is the case with other Eve products.
The certification also confirms support for over-the-air firmware updates via Matter.
However, the device appears to lack full support for Matter Binding. Without this feature, it cannot sync states or control other blinds and shutter switches directly – it can only be controlled by other devices.
How to get it?
As with most Eve devices transitioning from HomeKit to Matter, you’ll need the Eve app to perform the protocol migration. Once Eve officially announces availability, you can add the switch to Apple Home and follow the in-app steps for the upgrade. The process will generate a new Matter setup QR code, which you can save on your phone or print and stick to the device for future use. The app will guide you to add it back to Apple Home after the upgrade process.
A slow promise
Eve has long promised or suggested that its Thread-enabled HomeKit devices would be upgradeable to Matter. The Shutter Switch, first showcased at IFA 2022, is now finally joining the Matter ecosystem. That said, some other older devices – such as the Eve Flare portable lamp (2018) and Eve Aqua sprinkler – have yet to show any signs of Matter support.
Still, it’s encouraging to see Eve continuing to follow through. In my experience, its firmware releases are generally well-tested and stable, meaning the long wait did lead to a qualified experience.
