Notable shade manufacturer Hunter Douglas announced today that its PowerView Gen 3 products will finally support Matter via a gateway – bringing native local integration to major smart home platforms.
The company initially announced its plans to add Matter support to Gen 3 products in 2022, alongside its migration away from the proprietary Gen 2 protocol to Bluetooth for Gen 3, as reported by The Verge. Now, that promise has been fulfilled, enabling native integration with Google Home, Apple Home, SmartThings, Home Assistant, and more.
What’s supported?
According to official documentation, the new Matter integration enables “full control of all services” through the Matter bridge in PowerView Gateway and Gateway Pro. “All existing PowerView Gen 3 shades are supported – no new hardware required,” the company noted in a press release sent to Matter Alpha.
Certification details confirm the gateway is running on Matter 1.2 and connects via Ethernet. This offers stable connectivity, though it does represent a trade-off in terms of Matter stability compared to newer spec versions.
Through the gateway, connected blinds are exposed to Matter. Composed shade types are broken down into sub-devices to allow detailed control. Examples include:
-
Top-Down Bottom-Up / Stacking Duolite: Separate control for top and bottom rail tiles
-
Rolling Duolite, A Deux, Independent, and Operable Liner: Separate front and liner tiles with tilt support
-
Aura: Basic light control
In Google Home, compared to the original integration, scenes will not be exported from the Hunter Douglas app via Matter.
How to get it?
To enable Matter with your Hunter Douglas PowerView setup, you’ll need:
-
PowerView App (version 3.12.1 or later) and a registered account
-
PowerView Gateway or Gateway Pro with firmware version 3.2.46 or later
-
A Matter controller in your preferred ecosystem (e.g., HomePod for Apple Home)
Once your gateway is updated, you can enable the Matter bridge via the vendor app and obtain onboarding codes for Matter setup.
Hunter Douglas offers a broad range of motorized blinds and shades – over 20 styles and hundreds of fabric options. Products like the Aura line even allow control of illuminated shades via Matter. While the rollout may have taken time, the brand continues to bring some fancy choices to the smart shade market.
