Shelly has recently released two new compact smart‑relay modules – 1L Gen 3 and 2L Gen 3 – that operate without a neutral wire and are Matter‑ready via firmware update. Designed for retrofit lighting control, both devices fit behind standard switches and bring local or cloud‑based automation to homes without replacing the switch.
Neutral‑free relays
Built for easy installation, the Gen 3 relays draw power from the live line only. A Shelly Bypass 1L/2L Gen 3 (included in the pack) must be installed in parallel at the load for bulbs above 5 W. Shelly offered a rare option for Matter lovers who live in a house without neutral wires in the switch boxes, while rivals still require one to work.
Their slim 35 × 35 × 16 mm housings tuck neatly into wall boxes or behind toggle and rocker switches, letting you upgrade existing fixtures in under ten minutes. An embedded web interface allows users to assign device names, invert switch logic, set minimum load thresholds, and review basic usage logs without needing any third‑party tools.
Both relays support 220–240 VAC, include an internal temperature sensor for overheat protection, and receive OTA firmware updates. They’re engineered to work with a wide range of bulbs and LED drivers, making them suitable for most residential lighting retrofits.
Various integrations
As a Shelly listing, both devices can work via Wi‑Fi for direct, local control via the Shelly app or built‑in web UI. When online, you can also access and manage them remotely from anywhere. Integration with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, MQTT, and Home Assistant enables voice commands, scheduling, and complex automations. Scripting and webhooks allow advanced users to trigger scenes based on external events or sensor inputs. The upcoming Matter firmware would also bring them to Apple locally.
Matter‑ready with a beta firmware
Shelly noted that the two new Gen 3 devices will enable Matter officially via a future update. The firm has published the 1.6.0‑beta1 Matter firmware for all Gen 3 devices – fulfilling its promise from last year’s roadmap. This beta implements the Matter 1.2 specification, unlocking official Apple Home integration and compatibility with Google Home, Alexa, Home Assistant, and other Matter hubs. Note that, per the current spec, energy‑metering clusters aren’t yet exposed to Matter platforms, even on power‑monitoring models. The beta is available via each device’s local Web UI (accessed by IP) and is intended for testing rather than critical installations.
The single channel Shelly 1L Gen 3 is priced at 35.58 eur ($40.4), while the dual channel version, Shelly 2L Gen 3, is priced at 41.53 eur.
