Austrian smart home vendor SmartSetup has released Matter 1.4 firmware for its switches and outlets, bringing improved stability.
New Matter smart home specifications are typically slow to reach devices, but the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) recently introduced a fast-track certification procedure to speed things up. SmartSetup’s swift adoption of Matter 1.4 demonstrates how this new process can benefit both users and vendors.
What’s new?
According to the vendor, the Matter 1.4 update – with official certification from the CSA – covers SmartSetup’s two-, three-, and four-gang switches, as well as its two-gang power outlet.
The detailed release notes include:
-
The speed of restoring the controllable state after the device is powered off and then powered on has become faster.
-
The number of devices that can be networked in the ecosystem has increased, and 50 thread devices can work stably.
-
The network configuration speed has been improved, and the working stability of the equipment has been improved.
-
Other bug fixes.
Certification documents suggest these devices use Espressif Thread chipsets—a newer entrant in the ecosystem that's beginning to see broader adoption. The use of the fast-track certification procedure likely explains why SmartSetup is among the first to support Matter 1.4.
How to get them
Currently, Apple, SmartThings, and Home Assistant can deliver Matter firmware updates to supported devices. Simply add your SmartSetup device to one of these platforms to receive the update.
Home Assistant and SmartThings usually detect new updates quickly, showing a notification or an icon on the device card.
For Apple Home, it may take a few days for the update to appear. You can also enable auto-updates for accessories to allow updates to install automatically.
More about SmartSetup
SmartSetup is a smart home startup offering Matter-over-Thread devices, including light switches, power outlets, valves, and sensors, as listed on its official website.
The smart sensor should be a rebrand of Heiman from its iconic design, making it one of a few retailers to get a Matter-over-Thread temperature and humidity sensor.
Most of the switch and outlet lineup features a generic design with a glass panel and touch buttons. The switches are compatible with or without a neutral wire, and their always-on nature makes them effective Thread routers for extending network coverage.
However, the devices do not include power monitoring features – only basic on/off control with overload and overheat protection.
