Japanese firm Disign Incorporated has officially released the SMARTWIZ+art, an E-ink digital art frame that doubles as an advanced Matter smart home display. The device, which was certified on July 31, 2025, under the Matter 1.4 specification, is one of the first products to be certified for two new and highly anticipated Matter features: the “Thread Border Router” device type and as a notification receiver.

A cordless E-ink art frame

On the surface, the “SMARTWIZ+art” is a 7.3-inch digital art frame using a color E-Ink display (800x480 resolution). Because it uses electronic paper technology, its power consumption is near zero except when changing the image. This allows it to run on its built-in 3000mAh battery for approximately 30 days on a single charge.

This cordless design, combined with a thin 16.3mm and lightweight 360g body, means it can be placed anywhere – on a wall or tabletop – without worrying about power outlets. It charges via a standard USB-C port.

The product features a kickstand and a keyhole slot, enhancing its flexibility for displaying artistic content.

Notably, the device has an endpoint for On/Off Light, according to the compliance files, the display is able to toggle visibility through Matter platform as a light. Considering E-Ink doesn’t have on/off technically, this could mean clearing content of the display for privacy.

A new kind of “Matter hub”

The product’s real innovation lies in its smart home capabilities. It is certified for Matter 1.4 and connects via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, and Thread 1.4.

It functions as an OpenThread Border Router. More importantly, it is one of the first devices to be certified as the official “Thread Border Router” device type defined in Matter. This is a significant step beyond the closed-box border routers found in most smart speakers. According to the Matter specification, a certified Thread Border Router device is manageable, allowing a user to configure it to join an existing Thread network (PAN), share its network credentials with another new router, or create a new network.

As of now, SmartThings should be the only Matter platform announced to support this device type.

OpenThread-wise, the device may also open up the REST API by default, manageable by user and platforms like Home Assistant for new device setup, Thread network creation, and channel switch.

The “SMARTWIZ+art” is marketed as a Matter device notification receiver. This is an innovative feature, also seen in Matter Casting-enabled displays, that allows the frame to receive push notifications from other Matter devices. For example, a Matter water sensor could trigger the frame to display a warning message. However, the exact mechanism for this is unclear.

For this to be a native Matter feature, it would need to support the “Messages” cluster, which does not appear to be included in the device’s current compliance file. It is possible this feature will rely on a platform-specific capability (like a cloud integration) for now, or that a future firmware update will add this cluster.

Price and availability

The SMARTWIZ+art is available at a discounted launch price of 19,800 JPY ($128.62). Pre-order sales in Japan began on November 10, 2025, on the smart home media site Mirainokurashi, and it is scheduled to be available on Amazon starting November 20.
