DCL Certified

Understanding the Distributed Compliance Ledger and Matter Alpha's certification badge.

What is the DCL Blockchain?

The Distributed Compliance Ledger (DCL) is a public, blockchain-based registry operated by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA). It stores authoritative compliance data for all Matter-certified devices, including vendor identifiers (VIDs), product identifiers (PIDs), and certification records for each software version.

Because the DCL uses a blockchain structure, every certification entry is tamper-resistant and versioned. That means when a product earns certification, updates its firmware, or has a certificate revoked, those changes become part of a permanent, transparent compliance history. Developers, platforms, and consumers can query the DCL to verify whether a Matter device is certified at any moment.

How We Decide When to Display the “DCL Certified” Badge

On Matter Alpha, we evaluate incoming DCL data and display a “DCL Certified” badge only when all of the following conditions are met:

1. Valid DCL VID and PID

The product has a valid DCL VID and PID. These identifiers must match an entry in the official compliance registry.

2. Certificate Exists

A certificate exists for the latest published software version. If the newest firmware listed for the device is certified in the DCL, it passes this check.

3. Certificate Not Revoked

The certificate is not revoked. We verify that dcl_certificate_revoked is false.

4. Currently Certified

The device is currently certified according to the DCL. The is_currently_certified flag must be true for its latest version.

Only when all four criteria are satisfied do we display the badge. If any condition fails, even temporarily, the badge will not appear.

Why a Badge Might Not Be Displayed

There are several legitimate reasons a device may not show as DCL-certified on our site, even if it appears fully functional or is widely available:

  • The product is still in testing

Manufacturers often list early versions of their devices in the DCL before formal certification is complete. These entries include a VID/PID but lack a valid certificate.

  • A new firmware version has been released but is not yet certified

Matter certification is tied to software versions. If a vendor uploads a new build to the DCL, but the certificate for that version is still pending, we temporarily treat the device as uncertified.

  • The certificate was revoked or marked inactive

Rare, but possible. If the CSA revokes a certificate—for example, due to a compliance issue—our logic hides the badge.

  • Incomplete or missing data

Occasionally a vendor publishes metadata without attaching the corresponding certificate entry. Without the full chain of information, we cannot mark it certified.

  • Data timing gaps

Our database syncs frequently, but there may be short windows where updates from the DCL have not yet propagated.

Important Disclaimer

Matter Alpha is not the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), and we do not make certification decisions. We display certification status based solely on the best publicly available data from the DCL. While we strive for accuracy, errors or delays are always possible.
