Chinese technology pioneer DJI has officially joined the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) recently, a move that comes just months after the company released its first high-end robot vacuum cleaner series.

Known primarily as a global leader in civilian drones and aerial imaging, DJI has recently expanded its portfolio into handheld cameras, Hasselblad optical components, and portable power storage. The entry of such a significant hardware manufacturer is expected to further diversify the alliance, bringing new industrial resources and technical expertise to the developing smart home standard.

Matter and the robotic vacuum market

With DJI now a member of the alliance, we would expect the company to focus its Matter integration efforts on its new line of robot vacuum cleaners. This category was added in Matter 1.2 spec and widely supported by major ecosystems last year, almost the timing when DJI made a surprise entry into the market with the release of its ROMO series in China.

The move brings DJI in line with its primary competitors. Rival manufacturers such as Dreame, Roborock, and Ecovacs have already released Matter-compatible models or announced updates for their existing lineups. For the Chinese market, Matter certification is increasingly viewed as a gateway to the Apple Home ecosystem, a key selling point for premium devices. It also serves as an essential feature for global markets where interoperability and privacy are highly valued.

It remains unclear whether DJI intends to update the current ROMO series with Matter support via a firmware upgrade or if the functionality will be reserved for entirely new models. If the company chooses to partner with established solution providers like Tuya, adoption could be rapid via the certification transfer program. There are no new certifications from the firm for Matter as of now. But given the timeline of their membership, new Matter-enabled models could potentially appear by mid-2026.

DJI did not immediately respond to inquiries regarding its specific roadmap for Matter updates.

The ROMO series

The ROMO series represents DJI’s first attempt to apply its navigation technology to the smart home. The devices incorporate a precision sensing system derived from the company’s flagship drones, claiming millimeter-level obstacle avoidance and the ability to navigate complex environments without user intervention. A standout feature is the flexible dual mechanical arm design, which allows the vacuum to fit into corners. The vacuum boasts 25,000 Pascals of suction power and a specialized “zero-tangle” dual roller brush system designed to eliminate hair buildup. The docking station features a unique high-pressure self-cleaning system, aiming to automate the maintenance process fully from cleaning to self-repair.

The lineup consists of three flavors. The ROMO S features a traditional white robot and base station. The ROMO A introduces a transparent robot case paired with a white station. The flagship ROMO P features a fully transparent design for both the robot and its docking station.

The ROMO series utilizes a modular architecture equipped with high-performance binocular fisheye sensors and three wide-angle solid-state LiDAR units. This sensor array provides a broad field of view, helping the robot avoid getting stuck in blind spots or trapped by irregular furniture legs. The system fuses data from multiple sensors to perceive the environment in depth. This allows the ROMO P to operate effectively in low-light areas, such as under sofas, and to correctly identify transparent or black objects that often confuse standard laser navigation systems.

Current pricing for the series places it firmly in the premium segment. The ROMO S is priced at 4,699 yuan ($657.86), the ROMO A at 5,399 yuan ($775.41), and the flagship ROMO P at 6,799 yuan ($976.47).
