Eve Systems has officially announced that its smart plug, Eve Energy, now supports Matter 1.3 alongside energy monitoring features packed in the spec. The update, which was disclosed in a press release on Thursday, positions the Eve Energy as one of the first plugs available with native energy sensors adhering to Matter specifications.
The integration of the Matter 1.3 update enhances the functionality of Eve Energy by standardizing energy monitoring across various platforms. Previously, Eve Energy employed vendor-specific clusters to enable energy monitoring, an approach that necessitated workarounds on platforms like SmartThings and Home Assistant.
Eve’s recent actions highlight its commitment to Matter and the ongoing updates to its long-standing products, while some competitors, like Tapo, remain inactive. According to the press release, Eve Systems contributed to the Matter specifications concerning energy sensors, underscoring its active participation in advancing the Matter standard.
How do you update Eve Energy plugs?
The update is currently available via the Matter “server” – DCL Main Net, allowing users with compatible Matter platforms to access the new features through Over-the-Air (OTA) updates. Users can apply the update using their respective platforms.
Major Matter platforms supports Matter OTA includes:
-
Apple Home
-
SmartThings
-
Home Assistant
I’ve successfully updated one of my Eve Energy plugs using the SmartThings app. However, Home Assistant has encountered errors during updates. As for Apple, they typically take longer to push notifications to users for updates, so I haven’t had the chance to update them via HomeKit.
Alongside the Matter update, Eve Systems also introduced version 1.3 of the Eve app for Android. This new version provides users with additional features, including insights on power consumption and projected costs, presented through detailed graphs. Furthermore, Eve Energy has attained the "Works With Home Assistant" badge for Eve Energy, enhancing its interoperability tested and work better with the platform.
This rollout comes at a time when energy monitoring features are still relatively uncommon across Matter-enabled platforms. As support grows, Eve users can expect to benefit from these enhancements immediately upon receiving the Matter update, which bodes well for future compatibility with devices from other manufacturers, such as Aqara.
