Aqara has launched the Spatial Multi-Sensor FP400 globally, bringing its 60GHz presence sensor beyond China with Matter over Thread, Zigbee and real-time tracking for up to 10 people.
The FP400 is effectively a Matter-era upgrade to the idea behind Aqara’s FP2: use radar to understand where people are in a room rather than simply whether someone is present. It also extends Aqara’s wider shift toward hardware that can switch between Zigbee and Thread instead of making users choose the protocol when buying the device.
Aqara takes its radar expertise into Matter
Aqara has spent several years building a dedicated lineup around mmWave presence sensing. The FP2 brought 60GHz radar, multi-person detection and zone positioning to global users in 2023, while the later FP1E offered a simpler Zigbee alternative. The battery-powered FP300 expanded the idea again by combining 60GHz radar with PIR, temperature, humidity and light sensing.

FP400 pushes that concept toward more detailed spatial tracking. Its new 60GHz radar can track and count up to 10 people simultaneously across an area of up to 10 by 8 meters, around 860 square feet, with a 120-degree field of view. Users can split the space into as many as eight zones for automations based on where people are and how they move between different parts of a room.
Aqara also uses its AI Spatial Learning software to map room boundaries and entrances and reduce false triggers from sources including pets, airflow and robot vacuums. A built-in illuminance sensor adds lighting conditions to automations.
Compared with FP2, the biggest architectural change is connectivity. FP2 uses 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, while FP400 adds native Thread and Zigbee, making it the clearest Matter upgrade yet to Aqara’s higher-end spatial sensing line.
Aqara continues its dual-protocol move
FP400 also follows a broader change across Aqara’s recent hardware: Thread is increasingly being added alongside Zigbee rather than replacing it outright.
Aqara has already taken that approach with products including the FP300, Climate Sensor W100, H2 switches, newer lighting, and heating controls. The company now maintains a growing range of devices that can switch between Zigbee for deeper Aqara-specific functions and Thread for native Matter connectivity.

A smart, wire-compatible dimmer switch that allows for optimal light dimming, remote control, and seamless integration with other smart home devices.
FP400 follows the same model. In Zigbee mode, it connects through an Aqara hub and can then be exposed to Matter ecosystems through the hub’s bridge. In Thread mode, it can join Matter platforms including Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, Home Assistant, Homey and SmartThings directly through a compatible Matter controller.
There is still a huge limitation when using third-party platforms directly. Aqara says the FP400 exposes only one overall presence sensor and one illuminance sensor over Matter.
Hub-less configuration with Thread
FP400 also changes how Aqara handles its own app when a device is running over Thread.
Earlier Aqara Thread products could already connect directly to third-party Matter platforms without an Aqara hub. The Door and Window Sensor P2, for example, launched with direct support for third-party Thread Border Routers, while Aqara later positioned Hub M3 as the way to bring additional Aqara-specific configuration to Thread devices such as adjustable sensitivity.

With FP400, Aqara says users can add and configure the sensor in Aqara Home without owning an Aqara hub at all. The app can instead use an existing, preconfigured third-party Thread Border Router.
That is a meaningful change for Aqara’s Thread strategy. Native Matter no longer has to mean choosing between a third-party ecosystem and Aqara Home simply because the user does not own an Aqara hub. It also makes the dual-protocol model more useful for people building around Apple Home, Home Assistant or another Matter platform while still wanting Aqara’s own configuration interface.
FP400 Pro remains a separate story
Aqara’s announcement also introduces the Spatial Multi-Sensor FP400 Pro, positioned for assisted living and specialized elder-care applications. Unlike the standard FP400, however, its global rollout is not confirmed. Aqara told Matter Alpha that there is currently no confirmed plan to make the FP400 Pro globally available.
The standard FP400 was previously released in China and is now available globally through Aqara’s website, authorized retailers and Amazon.
