German smart home vendor Eve recently released a new update for its outdoor sensor, Eve Weather, adding a new unit switch feature and bumping Matter specs to 1.3.

Eve Weather is a three-in-one outdoor sensor, featuring temperature, relative humidity, and pressure sensors. It can calculate a 12-hour weather trend locally based on sensor readings. However, this feature is not available via Matter at the moment.

What's in the Eve update?

The update, version 3.5.0, is Eve Weather’s first OTA since the initial Matter support, which upgrades the HomeKit firmware to a Matter one. Eve responded to Matter Alpha on social media about the update, saying the update would enable the temperature unit switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit via a double press on the reset button.

Like other Eve devices with the 3.5.0 firmware, Eve Weather is now also compliant with the Matter 1.3 specifications. This is an upgrade from Matter 1.1, which was certified in 2023. From the new certification issued on April 1, the device adds time synchronization and unit localization clusters for such features, so they can be exposed to Matter platforms for configuration if they offer support.

Switching units from the device side is common for Matter, as it is not included in the standard specifications. Without a vendor app, such switching would be challenging, as you cannot expect every Matter platform to add optimization for it. The recently unveiled Ikea thermometer also has a physical switch for temperature units.

To update the Eve Weather, you need a supported Matter platform and corresponding hub, including Home Assistant, Apple Home, and SmartThings. They will prompt you to update the sensor. However, I have yet to successfully update it via any of the platforms mentioned above.

Do you need the update?

Eve Systems is one of the major Matter-over-Thread device makers. It recently released new Matter 1.3 firmware for its smart plug, Eve Energy, enabling energy sensors via Matter platforms. The brand has been gradually updating its product line, aiming to bring more HomeKit-over-Thread devices to Matter. Recent updates include MotionBlinds and Thermostat products. Some devices yet to be updated include the Eve Flare Lamp, Eve Room, and Eve Water Guard.
