The open-source home automation platform Home Assistant has unveiled its 2025.5 update, which includes two new Matter device additions. It comes just two months after Home Assistant received Matter certification.

Home Assistant’s constant updates

One of the key benefits for anyone using Home Assistant as their smart home platform is its regular updates. As the name indicates, 2025.5 is the May update, and previous iterations are similarly names.

A whole host of enhancements are included in this update, from improvements to the platform’s backup system (which lets you store backups of the system configuration, as well as specific device configs), to support for Z-Wave Long Range. (This is a new iteration of Z-Wave which has been developed for greater range. It is mostly likely to find applications in home security systems.) Many others have been added, and patching is regular.

Home Assistant users have the benefit of a huge community of smart home enthusiasts and developers, make it quite unique among the Matter-compatible platforms.

Matter updates in Home Assistant 2025.5

Along with the main Home Assistant feature additions, v2025.5 also includes two new Matter enhancements.

First, the water heater device type, added in the Matter 1.4 specification, has been added. This enables remote control, temperature management, scheduling, and heating boost function support.

Second, and perhaps more convenient depending on your smart home requirements, SwitchBot integration has been given support for Roller Shade and Hub Mini Matter devices.

Two million users

Furthermore, the developers have announced that the platform now has 2 million installations worldwide. Obviously, this is an incredible figure, one that might well make you think about switching to Home Assistant from your current Matter-compatible smart home platform. (I know I am!)

To celebrate this massive landmark, Home Assistant users are being encouraged to join worldwide meetups on May 24th. You can find out more at the Home Assistant Day 2025 page.
