Resideo has announced the launch of its latest Matter-compatible smart thermostat—the Honeywell Home X8S. The company's newest thermostat not only puts home climate control at your fingertips, but it can also monitor air quality and display live feeds from select video doorbells.
Honeywell Home X8S Smart Thermostat: why it matters
Unlike the simplistic design seen in Honeywell's X2S Smart Thermostat, the all-new X8S features an expansive, 5-inch touchscreen display—the largest in its class according to Resideo. The larger screen makes viewing current conditions easier from greater distances and provides users with a canvas for customizing their homescreens with colorful themes and widgets.
The X8S's display also enables its headlining feature—video doorbell integration—which allows users to view live, real-time feeds and speak to visitors with the thermostat's built-in microphone and speaker. Currently, the thermostat supports Resideo's First Alert VX1 HD Video Doorbell as well as doorbells from Ring, although specific models were not mentioned.
When it comes to HVAC compatibility, the X8S Smart Thermostat works with up to 4 Heat/2 Cool Heat Pump systems and up to 3 Heat/4 Cool for conventional systems. As with most smart thermostats, the X8S is DIY-friendly with a fairly simple installation process; however, it requires a C-Wire for operation and a 2.4 or 5GHz Wi-Fi network for remote access.
Users can access thermostat controls via the First Alert app and through smart home ecosystems like Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, and SmartThings with Matter smart home integration. In addition to basic monitoring and adjustable temperature controls, the thermostat can be used alongside other Matter devices in scenes, groups, and in automation.
Other highlights include an onboard radar sensor that detects presence/occupancy, recommended scheduling, and optional remote room sensors for greater energy efficiency. The thermostat also provides IAQ air quality monitoring, which works with home humidity and ventilation systems if equipped.

The Honeywell Home X8S Smart Thermostat is available now at honeywellhome.com, Amazon, and select retailers in the U.S. and Canada. Pricing for the thermostat starts at $219.99, and additional bundles that include a remote room sensor are available for $249.99.
