Major smart home device maker Ikea is rumoured to release a Matter-over-Thread ceiling light, according to a notable Matter leak.

There has been a series of news from Ikea recently, both from FCC filings and industrial leaks. All these pieces contribute to the firm’s ambition to release Matter and Thread-powered devices.

The leak, from @CyberModStudio, suggests that Ikea will introduce a Matter-over-Thread ceiling light equipped with the Silicon Labs radio chipset MG24. This chipset belongs to the MG2X family and is capable of dual-protocol operation, supporting both Zigbee and Thread. This opens up the possibility that the new batch of Ikea devices could feature both Zigbee and Thread connectivity, allowing them to compete with rivals like Aqara and Bosch.

Recent FCC listings for Ikea have revealed some lighting products with approved radio frequencies for Bluetooth, Zigbee, and Thread usage. The collection includes various lighting products and a thermometer named Timmerflotte. Rumors suggest that a dual-key programmable switch is also in the internal testing phase.

Ikea aims to offer more affordable smart home devices, particularly with its bold move into sensors, which typically require Thread technology and cost more than Wi-Fi options. For instance, temperature and humidity sensors from Eve cost around $80, while the Arre (formerly Tuo) Temperature sensor costs $50. In comparison, Ikea’s small gadgets are usually priced between $10 and $20.

Meanwhile, the company has been working rapidly to transition most of its Zigbee products to Matter compatibility using the Dirigera Hub, which acts as a Matter bridge. Currently, smart lights, switches, dimmers, blinds, plugs, air purifiers, and air quality sensors, along with motion, light, and door sensors, can all be integrated into the Matter platform with the Dirigera hub and the latest firmware. Some third-party Zigbee devices connected to it will have similar functionalities, akin to Hue’s devices.

However, some features and device types are still missing, such as water leak detectors and energy monitors, which were introduced in the Matter 1.3 specifications.
