The Sensereo MS-1 smoke sensor and alarm, which features Matter-over-Thread, is now available order.
As well as supporting Matter, the device is also listed as being compatible with Apple HomeKit and Samsung SmartThings.
Wait: Matter smoke alarms?
Yep, they’re a thing. Due to their small size, low data requirements, and usual difficulty in reaching or replacing, Matter smoke alarms typically use the low-power mesh network protocol Thread (we’re not aware of any that do not).
Various Matter smoke alarms are available, but not all of them work in the same way. Some rely on photoelectric sensors, others split-spectrum sensors. Some use sensors that detect ionization, although this type of sensor is restricted in some territories.
The Sensereo MS-1 device uses photoelectric sensors. This relies on a pair of infrared diodes, one emitting, one receiving. When smoke is detected, the infrared is diffused, and hits the receiver in a different way, triggering the alarm.
The Sensereo MS-1 smoke sensor and alarm
As with any smoke alarm, the MS-1 is designed to be easy to install. Meanwhile, the QR code on the device makes it simple to enroll on any Matter smart home network.
Initial research from Matter enthusiasts online (such as @CyberModStudio) demonstrate that the Sensereo MS-1 has been tested with iOS 18.4 public beta 1.

The device itself consists of a high temperature resistant shell, which houses the photoelectric sensor unit, Matter-over-Thread module, and dual batteries. It has a width of 11cm, has a green/yellow LED indicator mounted on the front, and off/on switch on the back. This can only be accessed by removing the alarm from the base plate.
Where can you get the Sensereo MS-1 smoke detector?
Availability isn’t completely clear at this stage. The Matter-compatible smoke alarm is definitely up for preorder from the website in the European Union and the UK.
The Sensereo MS-1 is now available to preorder direct from Sensereo. While no dispatch or release date is provided, the item can be reserved for a small fee (£1 in the UK) ahead of full payment on May 24, 2025.
