The Thread Group has launched a new mobile app aimed at providing users with deeper insights into how connected devices communicate within their local Thread-based networks. The release of the Thread Network Diagnostics app comes as the wireless standard continues to gain traction in the broader smart home space—alongside Matter—where interoperability and transparency are key priorities.
Real-time device discovery and network insights

According to its description, the new Thread Network Diagnostics app offers the following to "developers, researchers, and IoT enthusiasts":
- Visual representation of your Thread network structure
- Real-time device discovery and connectivity insights
- Integration with compatible border routers (e.g., Google Nest)
- Network diagnostics and connection details
Based on our brief hands-on, Matter Alpha's Ward Zhou was able to see a visual overview of his extensive Thread network of over 70 devices through the Toplogy area of the app. The visualization depicts devices of all types—Border Routers, Routers, Sleep End Devices, and Active End Devices—and shows routes and wireless quality throughout the network, which should be helpful when diagnosing connectivity issues.

Additional details can be found in the app's List view, which presents devices by their ID, and tapping one brings up five additional menus: Overview, Network, Performance, Topology, and Battery. Overview provides details such as Mac address, Thread Version, and the current operating Device Mode, while the Network area shows wireless channel, IDs, and Leader Data.
Performance shows quality and sequence routes, and Topology breaks down network activity and signal strength through metrics like Connection Time, Timeout, Link Margin, and Average RSSI. And as you might expect, the Battery tab shows current levels.
The app also allows for the downloading and sharing of Thread network information. Users can anonymize their Mac/IP addresses and obscure mobile device information when sharing with built-in privacy controls.
Android-only—for now

The Thread Network Diagnostics app is currently available as a free download for Android devices through the Google Play Store. An iOS version of the app appears to be in the works, too, as the Thread Group's example screenshots from a debug build depict the app running on an iPhone.
For now, iPhone users can visualize their Thread Network with Home Assistant, or by downloading third-party apps such as Eve for HomeKit and Matter.
