Ikea’s recent launch of 21 new Matter-enabled devices was a significant step, covering a wide range of smart lighting, sensors, and controls. This new line up, built on Matter-over-Thread, signals a major reboot for the company's smart home ambitions.
However, despite the comprehensive launch, several of Ikea’s most popular and unique Zigbee products have yet to be replaced. As Ikea has previously stated its goal is to move its entire smart home range to Matter, here is a list of the Zigbee classics we can expect to see updated next.
The most anticipated: smart blinds
The most obvious omission from the new line up was smart blinds. Ikea’s TRETUR (black-out roller) and TRIPPEVALS(black-out cellular) blinds are among the most affordable and popular smart shades on the market. These Zigbee-based products are now several years old and are a prime candidate for a Matter-over-Thread upgrade, which would also include a new wireless blind controller.

The incomplete system: air purifiers
Ikea’s new product launch created an interesting gap in its air quality ecosystem. The company released the new ALPSTUGA air quality sensor, a native Matter device that replaces the older Zigbee-based VINDSTYRKA sensor.
However, the air purifier it was designed to work with, the STARKVIND, was left behind. The STARKVIND (available as a standalone unit or built into a table) is still a Zigbee-only device. We fully expect a Matter-enabled version of the purifier to be released soon to complete this new smart air quality system.

Integrated and cabinet lighting
The new KAJPLATS line covers standard bulbs, but Ikea’s smart lighting system is far more extensive. The Zigbee-based TRADFRI and SILVERGLANS light controllers are the core components for its cabinet, closet, and bathroom lighting systems, powering the MITTLED light strip series. These specialized drivers have not yet been updated.

Similarly, Ikea has several popular lamps with integrated Zigbee lighting, such as the PILSKOTT floor and pendant lamps, the NYMANE pendant, the STOFTMOLN ceiling light, and the JETSTROM wall or ceiling panel lights. None of these have been replaced, leaving a large opportunity for a new range of Matter-enabled integrated and fixed lighting.

The end of an era: smart audio
For years, Ikea’s smart audio solution has been the SYMFONISK series, a successful partnership with Sonos. However, that partnership is now officially ending, and the existing SYMFONISK products are being discontinued and will be sold only until stock runs out in early 2026.

This leaves a major gap in Ikea’s smart home lineup. With the Matter standard now supporting video players and speakers, there is a strong possibility that Ikea will re-enter this category with its own, in-house speakers and controllers built on Matter.
Other Zigbee classics awaiting an update
-
Light Strip: Ikea’s ORMANAS was a popular and budget-friendly 4-meter Zigbee light strip. The company has recently released “dumb” light strips, but a smart, connected light strip is an essential part of any lighting ecosystem. A Matter-over-Thread version is a likely and needed addition.

-
Water Valve: Ikea once sold the Knycklan, a Zigbee-based electronic dishwasher shutdown valve. While the product was niche and is at least five years old, the Matter spec now includes support for water valves and irrigation (likely in 1.5), opening the door for a new, Matter-enabled version.

-
Smart Power: The new GRILLPLATS is a single smart plug. However, Ikea’s old Zigbee line included multi-outlet power strips. A new modular power solution, perhaps inspired by the ASKVADER series but with smart Matter connectivity, would be a great expansion.

-
Signal Repeater: The simple TRADFRI signal repeater is a vital, low-cost part of many large Zigbee homes. As users build out their new Thread networks, they will need a similar, low-cost device to boost and extend the Thread mesh. A compact, USB-powered Thread repeater would be an attractive and essential option.

Hopefully upgrades and replacements for these items won't be far away.
