Ikea has dropped several hints about upcoming Matter-compatible devices featuring Thread connectivity. A few new products have already surfaced, appearing on FCC databases and being revealed from industry leaks. These include a new temperature and humidity sensor, a new lighting product, and a generic switch.
However, after further digging into the Matter databases, I found that the scale of their upcoming product range is even more ambitious than initially anticipated. In addition to the Dirigera, six new devices recently appeared on the Matter Distributed Compliance Ledger (DCL).
Here’s a breakdown of Ikea’s Matter devices currently in development and what we can expect from them:
New Tradfri bulbs
Tradfri has long been a classic series in Ikea’s smart home system. Although Ikea has replaced most smart home products with upgraded versions under new names, the lighting line continues to carry the original Tradfri branding.
In testing, the newly listed Tradfri device type is a dimmable light, indicating basic brightness-level control. We can expect something similar to Ikea's dimmable filament bulb or cabinet lighting with a single-color output.
The part number suggests a GU4 bulb following EU standards. Given that the Tradfri series usually shares hardware and software components, we might soon see an entire line of newly upgraded Matter-enabled Tradfri bulbs.
Bilresa dual button
Bilresa (translated as “road trip”) was first revealed by @cybermodstudio. We now have more details on this dual-button device, model E2489. Unlike Tradfri, the Bilresa dual button already has two firmware versions uploaded, indicating it's closer to market launch.
It adopts the Generic Switch device type, typically used as programmable switches on Matter platforms such as Apple Home and SmartThings. Initial firmware analyses confirm Thread functionality, though detailed specifications remain encrypted and inaccessible at this stage.
Fjernsyn sensor
The Fjernsyn sensor (translated as “television”), identified as model E2314, has the primary device type Occupancy Sensor. This could mean an upgrade from Ikea’s existing Vallhorn and Tradfri motion sensors, featuring basic motion and ambient light detection.
However, it remains unclear why this sensor shares its model number with the previously listed Timmerflotte temperature and humidity sensor.
Guleboj sensor
The Guleboj sensor (translated as “yellow bend”) is classified as a Flow Sensor, a rare component capable of “measuring and reporting the fluid flow rate,” the Matter spec noted. This could signify Ikea's entry into water management, aligning with its recent moves toward energy management. Earlier, Ikea launched a power meter socket, and the updated Dirigera Hub will soon include energy management capabilities, supporting the Matter 1.3 specification.
New hub and more
Two unnamed devices are also listed in the DCL database. Judging by their device types, these are a Matter Bridge and an Access Control device.
This suggests we can expect a new smart home hub from Ikea, either as an upgrade or an extension to the existing Dirigera hub that will soon mark three years since its release. Ikea has proceeded cautiously with integrating Thread features into Dirigera, even though the device contains two identical Silicon Labs radio chips supporting IEEE 802.15.4 for Zigbee and Thread as teardown showed.
If Ikea plans to introduce advanced capabilities, such as Matter Controller and Thread Border Router, into a single device but considers it challenging to upgrade the existing Dirigera hub, a new hub release seems quite likely.
Regarding the Access Control product, details are limited. The Access Control category is a universal cluster type in Matter that literally performs as the name suggests – managing access and permissions. A Matter developer in this field told Matter Alpha that “AccessControl is responsible for the baseline work of Matter. In the Matter door lock protocol, AccessControl serves as the central authority for permissions management.”
“It determines which users or devices can control the door lock, modify settings, and access data,” they added.
Dual Zigbee and Thread connectivity
There have been leaks about Ikea's adoption of multi-protocol radio chipsets from vendors such as Telink and Qorvo. This clearly indicates that those upcoming Matter devices will support Zigbee alongside Thread.
On the DCL, the Fjernsyn sensor and Bilresa dual button included instructions for their “Commissioning Mode Initial Steps,” mentioning Touchlink specifically – a Zigbee feature allowing devices to pair directly, without requiring a Zigbee mesh or dedicated hub. Ikea has previously deployed Touchlink extensively throughout Tradfri lights and controllers using Zigbee.
It’s shaping up to be an exciting year for Ikea’s smart home ambitions, considering this array of upcoming products. However, this information remains preliminary. A more clear indication for market launch would appear once devices pass certification from the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) or FCC, indicating they have reached the ending stage of development.
