Korean appliance maker LG saw a new wall switch receive Matter certification on Tuesday, marking an ongoing development and investment in the ecosystem.
The device, named LG Smart Wall Switch (2 Button), is a variation of the previously certified single and triple button models. All share the same Matter 1.3 specifications, the certification pages note.
What is the LG Smart Wall Switch (2 Button)?
According to the product description, this device is designed primarily for lights. A highlight is that the switch can operate with or without a neutral wire, which is quite rare for Matter-enabled switches. Even for Zigbee and Wi-Fi versions, there aren’t many options available.
From its compliance files, the switch appears to have multiple mode selection features, usually used by appliances like thermostats or robot vacuums for operation mode switching.
However, the binding feature is missing for this device, the files noted. Even though it adheres to Matter 1.3 specifications, power meters are not included, unlike Aqara’s listings. This could be due to a limitation of the neutral wire-free technical solutions or a consideration of manufacturing budget.
LG, the electronics giant, began its initiatives in Matter and Thread after the acquisition of Athom, the owner of Homey, in mid-2024. It has showcased an “LG version of Homey Pro” – ThinQ ON – with Matter and Thread capabilities. LG claimed that the hub can “understand the context of conversations and determine user preferences for each connected appliance” using AI.
In addition to the hub, LG has obtained a series of Matter-over-Thread devices certified by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), including the Smart Wall Switch, Air Quality Sensor, Motion Sensor, Door and Window Sensor, Temperature and Humidity Sensor, and Smart Button. The Thread collection covers major categories of smart home with a sleek design. As of now, LG and its ThinQ platform are following a path similar to Samsung SmartThings, which also offers solid Zigbee gadgets and smart appliances.
However, LG has yet to announce availability or any plans to introduce these Matter-certified devices to markets outside of Korea.
