Smart lighting brand Nanoleaf has introduced a new decorative light strip – the Matter Smart Multicolor Rope Light – offering full customization for light gradients and shape flexibility.
The launch marks Nanoleaf’s return to Matter smart home-compatible products, following a string of Wi-Fi-only releases like the Pegboard Desk Dock and PC Screen Mirror Lightstrip, which lacked support for Matter and Thread.
Matter Smart Multicolor Rope Light
The light resembles classic ambient light strips such as the Philips Hue Outdoor Lightstrip, though it's rated at IP20, limiting it to indoor use. Its thick silicone housing helps diffuse a smooth, even glow from the embedded RGB chips.
Control comes via a Matter-over-Wi-Fi controller similar to that of the Nanoleaf Essentials line. Users can adjust brightness, apply scenes, and toggle the built-in microphone for music sync effects.
The rope light supports over 16 million colors and a color temperature range of 2700 to 6500 K – standard among Nanoleaf products. It also integrates with the Nanoleaf Desktop Screen Mirror app or the Nanoleaf 4D Sync+, enabling immersive color-matching with on-screen content.
The five-meter strip includes 70 individually addressable zones and comes with 30 mounting clips, allowing users to “draw” lighting patterns on walls, ceilings, or furniture. Colors and scenes are set using the Nanoleaf app, and the company provides video demos to inspire creative setups.
While there is no exact listing for the product in the CSA certification database, it may fall under a universal listing used for Nanoleaf’s other light strips. In supported Matter platforms, users can adjust color, brightness, and power state. Home Assistant users can also configure a preferred power-on state.
Slowing down in Matter and Thread
Nanoleaf was once known for its Thread-based smart lights. But the transition from HomeKit to Matter presented early firmware stability issues that affected products like the Essentials line. As of now, series such as Shapes, Lines, Elements, Skylight, and 4D still lack Matter support.
Recent Nanoleaf products have primarily relied on Wi-Fi, contributing to a broader market gap for Thread-based smart lighting. Aside from a few offerings from Nanoleaf and Aqara, options in this space remain limited.
The Nanoleaf Matter Smart Multicolor Rope Light is available now at Walmart for $69.99.
