Primary home appliance maker LG adds a Thread-based plug with power meter to its Matter certification list on Monday, May 21st 2025.
This is another Matter-over-Thread device from the appliance giant in development, as we have spotted a series of sensors and switches certified. Some of them even have updated certifications before an official release.
All we know about LG Thread-based plug
LG noted that the plug has a “compact and simple design,” which should look like a typical plug -- like the Tapo P110M. It operates via Bluetooth and Thread with an On/Off Plug-in Unit device type, so in the Matter platform, it would be recognized as a socket and may allow you to change its type to light or fan.
In addition to the Matter platform, the device should be able to work with a “user-friendly” vendor app for schedules and voice control, according to the description.
The standard compliance file shows that the plug will have power meter features. Usually, you would be able to pull current operating voltage, current, power, and energy consumption on a supported platform like SmartThings and Home Assistant.
The file also hints that the LG Smart Plug would support group control and firmware update via Matter.
A growing Thread portfolio
LG has been spotted to have Matter-over-Thread devices certified since it acquired Athom, Homey’s parent company. So far, the firm has the following certified devices:
- LG Motion Sensor
- LG Temp and Humidity Sensor
- LG Smart Button (1 Button)
- LG Smart Button (2 Button)
- LG Door and Window Sensor
- LG Air Quality Sensor
- LG Smart Wall Switch (1 Button)
- LG Smart Wall Switch (2 Button)
- LG Smart Wall Switch (3 Button)
- LG Smart Plug
- LG ThinQ platform and app
- WebOS TV
Some of them come with a product picture, revealing a minimal and appealing design. LG once stated that before the end of 2024, the firm “plans to introduce IoT devices, including motion and light sensors, air quality sensors, temperature and humidity sensors, and smart plugs, all designed to integrate perfectly with ThinQ ON.” However, LG has yet to update the availability, including the release date and price tag.
