Smart switch and sensor maker SONOFF has released a Matter-enabled smart breaker with multi-admin, moving energy monitoring upstream to the core of the house electrical system.
While power tracking has been a popular addition to regular Matter plugs over the past year, tracking usage at individual wall outlets only provides a fragmented view of your home. The new BASIC-1GSP expands this capability to the main distribution box, allowing you to manage and monitor heavy hardwired appliances. Building a whole-home Matter energy management setup is now much easier, and it does not require a large investment.
DIN rail mounting and 32A load support
Basic DIN Rail
The BASIC-1GSP is designed to fit standard DIN rails. It installs directly inside electrical distribution boxes without requiring extra drilling or panel modifications. This layout is suited for centralized electrical management in residential buildings, factories, and industrial environments.
The breaker supports a 32A high-power load and operates on a 100-240V 50/60Hz input. Unlike standard smart plugs that max out at 16A, this 32A capacity makes the breaker suitable for heavy-duty electrical devices. It can handle circuits for electric floor heating, domestic water heaters, and EV charging stations.
For physical electrical protection, the device utilizes a double-pole switching design. When the switch is toggled, it disconnects both the live and neutral wires simultaneously. This ensures full physical isolation from the grid, improving electrical safety and device protection during maintenance.
Users can set specific current up to 32A, voltage, and power limits. If a connected appliance crosses these thresholds, the breaker automatically cuts off the output. This overload protection helps prevent circuit damage when running high-power appliances continuously.
However, unlike a traditional circuit breaker, the BASIC-1GSP does not provide residual-current leakage protection. It should therefore be installed downstream of a residual-current device (RCD/GFCI) to help protect against electric shock.
Real-time energy monitoring
The device tracks power, and energy consumption in real time. It also supports electricity cost calculation in the vendor app and allows users to store and export historical data to optimize energy usage and reduce bills.
It features an unusual combination; it runs on Wi-Fi 4, a pretty old Wi-Fi standard, while utilizing the newer Matter 1.4 spec for its application layer. The base radio capability could be limited due to the older Wi-Fi standard, especially for a chatty power meter, but its performance in a Matter setup is good enough. The breaker works with major Matter ecosystems including Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings according to the vendor.
However, the telemetry data exposed depends on the ecosystem you pair it with. The device exposes a main switch, power-on state configuration, current wattage, total energy, and energy exported in Home Assistant. In SmartThings, only the live wattage and power energy are available, while Apple only supports live power.
Pairing it with Home Assistant allows you to access most of the exposed data points. However, the breaker did not add more metrics into Matter like live voltage and current, which could be useful for certain automation triggers.
First impression
I unboxed a SONOFF BASIC-1GSP. The onboarding process was smooth after I fixed a network configuration issue on my end. Taking advantage of Matter’s multi-admin feature, I shared the breaker across Apple Home, Samsung SmartThings, and Home Assistant without any issues.
The build feels solid, about what you would expect from a standard circuit breaker. It switches quickly, although quite loudly, likely due to the relay designed to handle heavier loads. The breaker is also surprisingly slim, making it easier to stack multiple units inside a distribution box and organize appliances by room or zone.
