Heiman demonstrates the first Matter 1.6 sensor with NFC setup at IFA 2026

Heiman showcased a new generation of Matter sensors and gateways at IFA 2026, including what appears to be the first demonstrated sensor using Matter 1.6’s new NFC commissioning.

The security and fire-safety manufacturer also showed new smoke and CO alarms, a multi-protocol door and window sensor, and a Matter Bridge capable of bringing Sub-GHz devices into major smart home ecosystems.

The device demonstrating the new feature is Heiman’s HS2HT outdoor temperature and humidity sensor. The IP65-rated sensor uses Matter and was displayed at IFA alongside a clear “Matter 1.6 NFC Pairing Function” label.

Matter 1.6 introduced NFC commissioning in June, expanding NFC from simply carrying setup information into an alternative commissioning transport.

NFC could be particularly useful for professional and large-scale installations. Instead of scanning QR codes for every device and relying on Bluetooth LE to complete commissioning, installers can tap an NFC-capable commissioner against a device to start the process.

Matter 1.6 can also support commissioning before a device is fully powered. Installers could therefore provision batches of devices before installation, including equipment that becomes difficult to reach afterward.

The feature builds on Matter 1.4.1, which allowed the commissioning payload normally carried by a QR code to be stored in an NFC tag but still depended on Bluetooth LE for the actual commissioning process. Matter 1.6 allows NFC itself to handle the commissioning transport.

Heiman’s HS2HT is an early example of that capability moving from the spec into actual hardware.

Bringing Sub-GHz devices into Matter

Heiman also showed a new approach to bringing long-range devices into Matter ecosystems.

Its WS6GW Matter Bridge connects Zigbee and Sub-GHz devices and exposes supported functionality through Matter. Heiman lists Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Homey among supported platforms.

Sub-GHz connectivity can provide longer range and better penetration through buildings than 2.4GHz networks, making it particularly useful for smoke alarms and other safety devices distributed across larger homes and buildings.

The bridge lets these devices remain on Heiman’s Sub-GHz network while making them accessible from Matter platforms.

There are still relatively few examples of this approach. Homey is one notable platform that can expose devices using another Sub-GHz protocol, Z-Wave, through its Matter Bridge.

It is also an interesting step while lower-frequency connectivity is being explored for future Thread versions. For now, however, Heiman’s Sub-GHz network and Matter remain separate tech connected through the bridge.

A refreshed Matter safety lineup

Heiman also showed several additions to its safety portfolio.

The SC3 smoke and CO alarm is offered in different connectivity variants, including Matter, Zigbee, Wi-Fi and Sub-GHz models, with temperature and humidity monitoring built in.

Heiman also showed a mains-powered smoke and CO alarm with battery backup and interconnected alarm support, likewise offered in different protocol versions rather than combining all radios in one device.

The HS2VTD 4-in-1 door and window sensor combines contact and vibration detection with temperature and humidity monitoring, with separate Matter, Zigbee and Sub-GHz versions.

Heiman also showed the HS1ZT dongle, which can operate as a Zigbee coordinator, router, or a Thread RCP for platforms like Home Assistant.

Heiman has not yet announced pricing or retail availability for the new products shown at IFA.
