Aqara expands H1 Matter lighting lineup with new downlights and spotlights

Aqara has expanded its H1 full-color lighting lineup in China with new downlights and spotlights, bringing the same Zigbee and Matter-over-Thread dual-connectivity from its recently released H1 light strip controller into built-in ceiling lighting.

The new H1 series focuses less on saturated RGB effects and more on subtle colors and natural-looking white light. It offers an unusually wide color temperature range, high color rendering, deep dimming, and Apple Adaptive Lighting.

It shows Aqara building the H1 lighting into a wider system, with more models on the way.

Natural colors

The H1 uses Aqara’s new four-channel color-mixing system, the same lighting direction introduced with the H1 strip and controller in June.

Instead of relying on conventional RGB channels to create strongly saturated colors, Aqara is targeting what it calls “subtle color light,” designed to stay closer to natural white light while adding gentle color to a room.

The fixtures cover a wide 1,800K to 12,000K adjustable color temperature range and reach Ra97 for color rendering. Aqara also rates color consistency at SDCM below 5 and provides very deep dimming for low-light scenes.

That approach makes particular sense in Aqara’s home market of China, where residential lighting is increasingly moving from a single central ceiling fixture to multiple downlights and spotlights across a room. With more fixtures becoming primary light sources rather than accents, color quality and natural-looking white light become much more important than simply producing stronger RGB colors.

Built for different ceiling installations

Aqara is offering several versions rather than one fixed fixture.

The 75 mm, 12W family includes different beam angles, including 24-, 36-, and 60-degree options, depending on whether the light is being used for focused accent lighting or wider general illumination. Black and white finishes are also available.

There are both recessed downlight and spotlight designs, with options for different installation methods. The spotlight version can be adjusted by up to 25 degrees, making it better suited to wall washing, artwork, tables, and other areas where the light needs to be aimed after installation.

Aqara has also put some attention into thermal design. The fixture separates parts of the light and heat-dissipation structure and uses aluminum to move heat away from the light source, which should help reduce long-term light degradation.

Zigbee or Matter over Thread

Like the H1 light strip controller, the new fixtures support both Zigbee and Thread.

The Chinese version operates over Zigbee by default, giving users access to Aqara Home and its more advanced lighting controls, including custom dimming curves, dynamic lighting sequences, Group & Scene controls, and automations with other Aqara products.

Users can instead switch the lights to Thread and add them to a Matter ecosystem. That opens the fixtures to third-party Matter platforms without requiring them to remain inside Aqara Home. And its global version is expected to use Matter by default.

This switchable approach is becoming increasingly important across Aqara’s newer lineup. Products including the FP310 presence sensor use a similar Zigbee and Thread strategy, allowing Aqara to keep its richer proprietary features while giving users a more open route through Matter.

The trade-off remains the same: some of Aqara’s more advanced lighting effects and configuration options are exclusive through Zigbee and Aqara Home, while Matter exposes the standardized lighting capabilities.

Apple Adaptive Lighting

Apple Home gets another useful addition. The H1 supports Apple Adaptive Lighting, allowing Apple Home to automatically change white color temperature throughout the day.

That makes the broad color temperature range more useful. Users can leave everyday lighting adjustments to Adaptive Lighting, then use Aqara’s own controls when they want more customized colors or dynamic scenes.

This is not a Matter-defined feature, but you can get similar functionality through platforms such as SmartThings, Home Assistant, and IKEA Home Smart.

Aqara H1 availability

The Aqara H1 full-color downlight and spotlight series is now available in China through major e-commerce platforms and partnered installers.

The H1 comes in a 12W version designed for a 75 mm ceiling cutout, with 24-, 36-, and 60-degree beam angle options. The 36-degree version is also available in a pre-embedded installation design, giving installers another option for more integrated ceiling projects.

Black and white finishes are available. The series is listed from 399 yuan ($59.3) discounted.

Aqara has not announced international availability.
