IKEA’s new LILJEBAGGE brings Matter-over-Thread to smart heating on a budget

IKEA is making a surprising expansion to its smart home portfolio with LILJEBAGGE, a Matter-over-Thread radiator thermostat designed for water-based heating systems.

The furnishing giant has traditionally focused on relatively simple retrofit smart home products such as lights, plugs, remotes and sensors. LILJEBAGGE goes a step further by replacing the thermostat valve on a radiator and directly controlling room heating.

It is not IKEA’s first move into climate-related smart home products. The company has previously released temperature, humidity and air-quality sensors, along with connected air purifiers. LILJEBAGGE extends that portfolio from monitoring the indoor environment to controlling it.

The device previously surfaced in the IKEA Home smart app with little more than its name and an image. IKEA has now published the full product listing, while the device has also completed Matter certification.

A simple approach to radiator control

LILJEBAGGE follows the simple interface of IKEA’s latest smart home devices. Its front has a dot-matrix display similar to TIMMERFLOTTE, accompanied by dedicated “+” and “-” buttons.

Unlike smart radiator thermostats that use a rotating ring for temperature control, a short press on either button raises or lowers the target temperature. The controls are also used during calibration.

The thermostat is designed only for water-based radiators. IKEA includes six adapters to accommodate different radiator valves. 

There are also several functions designed specifically around radiator maintenance. Every other week, LILJEBAGGE automatically adjusts its valve to help prevent limescale buildup. An anti-freeze mode allows a small amount of heat to circulate when necessary to prevent pipes from freezing.  

The thermostat continues regulating to its last configured temperature without an internet connection. Users can also change the temperature directly from the device when remote control is unavailable.

Official spec sheet notes the thermostat measures 50 mm in diameter and 83 mm long. It requires two AA batteries (1.2 or 1.5V) with IKEA recommending its LADDA 2,450 mAh rechargeable batteries.

Matter takes IKEA further into climate control

LILJEBAGGE uses Matter over Thread, rather than the Zigbee connectivity found across IKEA’s previous generation of smart home products. It requires a Thread Border Router for connected control, with DIRIGERA serving that role within IKEA’s own ecosystem. IKEA also lists compatibility with Amazon, Apple, Google, Homey and Samsung through Matter. 

However, it is unclear if the thermostat supports Matter Binding for external sensors or automatic group control.

The thermostat also represents another expansion of IKEA Home smart as a Matter controller. IKEA certified the software as a Matter controller, allowing DIRIGERA and the IKEA Home smart app to commission and control third-party Matter devices.  

With LILJEBAGGE, that support now extends to the thermostat device type.

In my testing, a thermostat bridged through an Aqara Hub M3 could be added successfully to IKEA home smart app. The thermostat endpoint appeared as expected, although interoperability was incomplete: IKEA could only control its heating mode.

That suggests support for the device type is already present, but thermostats may still expose limitations depending on how their features are represented through Matter.

Availability

LILJEBAGGE is now listed by IKEA Sweden for 199 Swedish krona ($20.70), making it one of the cheapest Matter options for individual radiator control. Its article number is 806.220.62, which can be used for stock inquiry.

IKEA has not yet detailed broader international availability.
